Partner Company of Visit Buenos Aires
Our story begins more than four decades ago, in the heart of Buenos Aires—the emblematic neighborhood of San Telmo. It was there that our family business was born with a single vision: El Tango.
Susana and Luis Machi first put down roots in San Telmo in 1968 with the intention of creating something special, something that would capture the essence and charm of Argentine Tango.
With determination and devotion, our Family embarked on the journey of opening a place that fused the tradition of Tango with the art of the show. This is how, in 1980, "La Ventana" first became the place where music and dance intertwined to provide a truly unforgettable experience.
From its humble beginnings, "La Ventana Tango Show" was a must-see for tango lovers from all over the world. The Tango house was filled with music, joy, and talented artists who captivated audiences with their passion and skill.
Over the years, La Ventana established itself as an icon of Buenos Aires' cultural scene. Our family-owned business grew and evolved, expanding its offerings to include gourmet dinners, Tango lessons, wine tastings, and special events.
Grateful and proud of these successes, our family decided to acquire the four-story building that was historically a "tenement" and had been home to numerous families who witnessed daily life in this famous neighborhood.
The historic building was meticulously restored in 2000 to exhibit its original splendor.
During the restoration, we discovered a buried cistern from the seventeenth century, totally forgotten in time. This relic had remained hidden for centuries and now became “El Aljibe” the ideal place to enjoy a classic express show.
The expansion and reconstruction of the building continued with a combination of history and modernity. In 2007 we opened "Gala Tango,"which offers a first-class gastronomy and premier Tango show, evoking the old Cabaret that in the 1930's had shone in Buenos Aires nightlife.
With the culmination of the 3 “houses,” La Ventana,El Aljibe and Gala Tango, operating at their peak, the possibility of acquiring the adjoining building arose. This was the space where Michelangelo, a Buenos Aires classic that was once the epicenter of the city's nightlife and culture, had operated from 1967 until the turn of the century.
Michelangelo had since lost its place in the city, and our family embraced the opportunity to revive its past glory and elevate Tango to the next level. With careful investment and a focus on preserving its historical heritage, we restored Michelangeloto its former grandeur. The venue reopened its doors in 2022 as a space dedicated to Tango and live music, attracting renowned artists.
Today, La Ventana Tango Show, El Aljibe, Gala Tango and Michelangelo all form part our families’ enduring legacy, as we proudly continue to expand our horizons and share Argentina's cultural richness with the world.
Each day, 10 Machi family members work together to make the project that Susana and Luis Machi once dreamed of a reality.
